For (most) people, investing is a scary concept. Putting money into ‘stocks’ can be confusing and overwhelming. These are intangible items that have been known to make people millionaires, cost them their livelihood, or fall somewhere in between. Only 54% of Americans currently own stock. So do not feel alone if you are a part of that 46%!
Investing is important in our economy.
By investing in a company you are basically saying, “Hey! I believe in you to do well so I’m gonna give you $XX (buying stock). In return, when you do well, you’re gonna increase the value of the money I gave you. If I want that money, I’ll just take my money back (selling stock)!” Now we all hope companies do well so you can sell with a profit, but sometimes they don’t and you leave with a loss. This risky side of investing is one reason why people fear the stock market.
More importantly, investing affects our culture.
By believing in a company (buying stock), you are saying that you want that company to thrive. All that it stands for, its mission, values, products, team, etc., are something you think the general public will also care about. For example, if you invest in a company that creates clothes for dogs, you are telling society that is an industry you would like to see thrive. Soon enough, if others also invest in that company and it’s stock ‘does well,’ it is guaranteed that more clothing companies for dogs will pop up. Not only will this competition drive prices down, but it shows that society is demanding these types of products.
So what does this have to do with you?
Ever hear the famous quote ‘be the change you wish to see?” Well now you literally can. By investing in companies that align with your values, you are telling society to create more like them. If you invest in a company that donates socks with every purchase, more companies will start increasing their charitable contributions. So if you’re tired of seeing companies that abuse animals, put your money where your mouth is and invest in vegan businesses. However, not a lot of vegan businesses are publicly traded.
Equity crowdfunding, an alternative to investing in publicly traded stocks but the minimum is only $100.
